Plein Air Outing to Groot Constantia

On Monday 7 February our plein air group got together at Groot Constantia Wine Estate – one of the most favoured plein air venues – for a wonderful morning of sketching and painting.

It is a gorgeous setting, with an abundance of scenes to paint and draw, whatever your preference. There are mountains in the distance with the vineyards and trees closer by, as well as the Cape Dutch buildings and the duckpond.

Although the day was hot, there was lovely spreading shade under the old oaks, with lush lawns to settle on, so everyone was comfortable.

There was much experimentation with different media and discussion afterwards, as we gathered for coffee at the Jonkershuis restaurant at about midday.

A truly delightful way to spend a morning and of course we’ll be back to do it again. If anyone would like to join the plein air group, please email Sonja Frenz – – and she’ll add your name to the whatsapp group.

Plein Air Outing to Groot Constantia

Sonja Frenz organised another wonderful plein air outing for us last Thursday, July the 30th. We all met up at Simon’s Restaurant, Groot Constantia – one of our very favourite plein air locations – at 9 am and spread out from there.

The great thing about Groot Constantia is the endless variety of possibilities, from old buildings and duckponds, to vineyards and mountains, with all sorts of trees and plant details in between….and for the energetic, there are spectacular views from the top of the hill. Something to inspire and absorb every artist, no matter what their preferences are.

The weather was beautiful and it was lovely to be outside enjoying it, amongst fellow artists, sketching and painting to our hearts’ content.

It still feels rather strange to be all masked up, but I suppose it’s something we all just have to get used to for the foreseeable future. Despite this, everyone really enjoyed the day and produced some very pleasing work.

Thanks again Sonja – all really looking forward to the next one!
