Vanessa Hounsell’s contemporary abstract and semi-abstract work lies within the tempestuous contemporary history of southern Africa, notably Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa. Vanessa subscribes to the esoteric theory that all beings are connected, and finds inspiration from the spirit within the universal voices of nature, music and literature. She explores the chatter within the bougainvillea, the fury of the wind, the song of the waves, the whispers in the leaves, the life teeming within. Themes of the spirit life and rebirth recur as the ongoing cycle of birth, decay, death and rebirth, repeat themselves over time – all forming part of an artistic symphony. Vanessa originally studied at UCT (1985-1990), and has subsequently completed her qualifications as Creative Arts Therapist with the Centre for Educational and Clinical Art Therapy, Sydney, Australia. She also teaches art to both children and adults.
