Anet Louw

The images I paint tell stories and depict aspects of life. My inspiration is a wide range of Old Masters’ drawings and paintings, particularly those from the 1800’s.
As an artist my creative process involves doing research on the various painting techniques of the Old Masters, as well as symbolism within art. I begin by making a light pencil drawing, then models form in a raw umber or gray scale underpainting. I then start with different colour glazes until the finished product is on my easel, and work mostly with a limited palette. When painting still lifes I work from life. I love to tell stories through silent objects, each with their own unique character. For portraits and figure work, I work from photographs.
