Exhibitions

Merit Exhibition

Our first exhibition of note for the year is the MERIT Exhibition, held at Richard Crowie Hall in Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. This exhibition follows on from the ANNUAL the previous year and consists of new artwork by those artists whose overall score at Selection Weekend qualified them for an invitation to exhibit 5 new pieces.  Typically, there are 40+ artists exhibiting.  As with all our exhibitions we include our Fellows, Senior Fellows and Master Fellows.

Members Exhibitions

SASA holds two Members’ Exhibition every year, the first is usually held in the first quarter of the year, and the second in the third quarter of the year at the Richard Crowie Hall in Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. These are self-selected exhibitions that celebrate our members’ unique styles and are particularly advantageous to new members within the Society. We typically have over 100 artists exhibiting. There is always something for everyone at these exhibitions, combining classic with modern. The exhibition is set up and manned by our members and it begins with an Opening night, with a guest speaker.

Selection weekend

Every year, usually the first weekend in August, SASA organises a weekend where members are invited to submit up to three artworks for judging by three independent art experts who assign points, out of 30, to each work.

These points are recorded and works that achieve or exceed a predetermined cut-off mark are then eligible to be exhibited at the ANNUAL Exhibition.

It is from these works that the judges decide on the winning entries and select the Best Of in each medium category.  They also choose work they deem Highly Commended and Commended.

Points scored at Selection Weekend also contribute to the achieving of Fellowship, Senior Fellowship and Master Fellowship of the Society.

It is important to note here that we encourage members to submit a total of 3 artworks in order to attain an overall qualifying score that leads to being invited to exhibit new artwork at our MERIT exhibition the following year.

Annual Exhibition

The ANNUAL is our most prestigious exhibition. The artwork selected as ‘Best of’, ‘Highly Commended’ and ‘Commended’ along with artwork that attained the predetermined qualifying points at the Selection Weekend is exhibited at the ANNUAL Exhibition, which is usually held in the last quarter of the year, at the Richard Crowie Hall in Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.

At our Opening event, we ask one of the Judges from Selection Weekend to be our speaker, and hand out the Trophies to our winning artists, together with certificates and other prizes, and most importantly, it is here where we announce any new Fellows, Senior Fellows or Master Fellows of the society.

Art in the Park

This is our only outdoor event of the year, where we invite other art societies to join us in a day of art, music and food. We hold it in November and we have over 100 talented artists under the trees in Rondebosch Park. There is also a lucky draw to win some beautiful artworks that have been kindly donated by several of the participating artists.
