Mike was inspired to take up painting by his mother Betty Smart and his daughter Sandi.
Being a geologist he had opportunity to travel extensively in rural Southern Africa, experiencing the rich diversity of terrain, ecosystems and cultures. His paintings express his love of nature, open spaces and the countries people
Untrained, he dabbled in acrylic until retiring in early 2017, when he started oil painting under guidance of Liz Pearson. He is thoroughly enjoying the expanded opportunity to explore art and oil painting in particular. He also interacts with the rich local talent via workshops and painting outings.
